Frequently asked questions

What do I need to play?

From the rulebook: a playing area of around 24" by 17" (an A2 or ANSI C sheet of paper works well), at least 10 standard six-sided dice (D6s), a measuring tool marked in inches (a 6" ruler works well), around three pieces of scenery to fight over (on paper you can simply draw them on), and a flotilla each.

How big a table do I need?

Not a big one. The rulebook uses a playing area of around 24" by 17", so an A2 sheet of paper on a coffee table is enough. Use one sheet for every 300 points each player brings: a 600-point game (300 each) uses one sheet, and a 1,200-point game (600 each) uses two side by side.

Where do I get the ships?

Start with the free Sovereign class STL on Thingiverse. 3D-printed box sets are coming in the future; for now, follow the Kickstarter page for updates.

Can I 3D print them?

Yes. Print them at home using the STL files we provide.

Is the app free?

Yes. The rules, glossary and list builder are free in the Free Void Flotilla app, and it works offline on your phone.

How long does a game take?

A 300-point game takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

What scale is Free Void Flotilla?

1:4000. At that scale an escort is about the length of a football pitch, and the large ships are the size of aircraft carriers or cruise liners.

Can I use my own miniatures?

Yes. The rules work with any miniatures you like, though our ships, tokens and bases are made to fit the game perfectly.

Resin or filament?

The ship STLs are designed for resin printers. Bases and tokens print fine on filament (FDM) printers and are free to download. To play, all you really need is the bases and tokens.

I missed the Kickstarter. Can I still get ships?

Yes. Late pledges will be open first, and after that box sets will be sold through our own shop on this website.
